Manage your products

Adding products to your store is easy.  First you create product categories and sub-categories to group your products and then add products to the categories.

Setup product categories

In CubeCart, products are organized into categories to make it easier for customers to browse your store and for you to manage your inventory. For example, if you sell computers, you might create a category named desktop computers and then add your computer product listings to it. A very simple store with just a few similar products might have only one product category. Larger stores, with a wide variety of products, will typically have multiple categories and subcategories.  For example, a large computer store would have categories for desktops, laptops, servers, etc.

Your CubeCart store must have at least one category for you to begin adding products to the store.

Add a category or subcategory to your store

You can add a new category or subcategory to your web store using the CubeCart Administration tool.  To add a category:

1)     Click on the Catalog → Add Category link.  A screen similar to the one below will be displayed.

 

2)     Enter the desired category name in the Category Name field. The category name is a descriptive label. It appears in many areas of the store including store menu selections so shoppers can browse your store by product groups. Upper and lower case letters, along with numbers, spaces, and symbols, can be used in the category name. Selecting shorter names will make some screens and reports easier to read.

3)     Identify the level where you want the new category added in your catalog hierarchy by selecting from the Category Level dropdown, e.g., place it at the Top Level or as a subcategory to one of the other categories.

4)     If you want to have a picture displayed when categories/sub-categories are viewed in your web store, either upload a new image using the  Upload New Image  button or select an existing image using the  Browse Existing Images  button.

5)     Finally, click the  Add  button to add the category to your web store.

Edit existing categories

To edit an existing product category, click on the CatalogView Categories link under the Administration tool menu. You will be presented with a list of all the categories you currently have configured.

 

Next to each category name you will see where the category is located in the store hierarchy (Directory), the associated picture (Image), if one has been added, and how many products are currently in the category (No Products).

Click on the Edit link next to the category you want to edit and a screen similar to the one below will be displayed to allow you to edit the category settings.

After you have completed your updates click on the  Edit  button to save your changes.

Delete a category

To delete a product category, click on the CatalogView Categories link under the Administration tool menu. You will be presented with a list of all the categories you currently have configured.

Click on the Delete link next to the category you want to delete.

 

Tip: You can not delete a category if it contains products (the Delete link will be grayed out).  To delete a category with products in it, first, delete or move all products from the category and then delete it.

 

Add a translation (Language) for a category

CubeCart allows you to offer your store in multiple languages, if you wish. To add a translation (Language) for a product category, click on the CatalogView Categories link under the Administration tool menu. You will be presented with a list of all the categories you currently have configured.

Click on the Language link next to the category you want to add the translation for.  You will be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

Click on the Add New icon and a screen similar to the one below will be displayed that allows you to select a language and to enter the translation for your category name.

Click on the  Save Category  button after you have finished entering the translation information to save the entry.

Edit a translation (Language) for a category

To edit an existing translation (Language) for a product category, click on the CatalogView Categories link under the Administration tool menu. You will be presented with a list of all the categories you currently have configured.

Click on the Language link next to the category you want to edit the translation for.  You will be presented with a screen similar to the one below that lists the languages you have configured for your categories.

Click on the Edit link next to the language you want to update and a screen similar to the one below will be displayed that allows you to update the translation for your category name.

Click on the  Update Category  button after you have finished editing the translation information to save the update.

Delete a translation (Language) for a category

To delete a translation (Language) for a product category, click on the CatalogView Categories link under the Administration tool menu. You will be presented with a list of all the categories you currently have configured.

Click on the Language link next to the category you want to delete the translation for.  You will be presented with a screen that lists all of the translations for the category.

Click on the Delete link next to the translation you want to delete.

Stock your store

Add products to your store

Adding a new product to your web store is very easy.  Just login to the store administration tool and click on the CatalogAdd Product link under the CubeCart Administration menu on the left. The Add Product screen will be displayed so you can enter the details of the new product.

 

Tip: You must have at least one category created under your store to be able to add a product. If you have not created a category yet, you need add one so you can create the new product.

 

 

Product Name

Enter the product name.  The name is a descriptive label for the product. It appears in many areas of the store and as the major heading for the product details screen.

The Product Name can be up to 250 characters long, but shorter names will make some screens and reports easier to read.  The name is alphanumeric, and can be changed at any time. Upper and lower case letters, along with numbers, spaces, and symbols, can be used in the product name.

You can set your store to sort products by the product name when they are displayed. This can be in either ascending or descending order.

You may wish to name products so the ordering naturally clusters certain items or brand names together. To do this, establish a naming convention for products where the more general information comes first, followed by the more specific information. For example:

Shirt, Silk

Shirt, Wool

Slacks, Flared

Slacks, Straight Leg

Tie, Paisley

Tie, Red

Compare the sort order above with the order that results when the detailed information is placed first when naming products:

Flared Slacks

Paisley Tie

Red Tie

Silk Shirt

Straight Leg Slacks

Wool Shirt

Product/Stock No.

Enter a product/stock number to uniquely identify the product in the store.  If you leave this value blank, CubeCart will automatically generate a number for you.

The Product/Stock No can be up to 60 characters long, but shorter codes will make some screens and reports easier to read. Shoppers will be able to view the product number.

Letters (upper and lower case) and numbers can be used, along with dashes and underscores. Other characters, including spaces, decimal points, quotation marks, and slashes, should not be used in the product number.

Product/Stock numbers must be unique. Upper and lower case versions of the same letter are recognized by the system as the being the same.

You may set your store to sort products by product number, either ascending or descending on the product list screen and within categories.

Description

Enter the product description to be displayed to shoppers when they browse your store.  The Description allows you to enter the descriptive information shoppers will see on the product screen in your store. The description can be as long as you like, and can be entered as plain text or as HTML code using the WYSIWYG editor.  The description should be entered in the default language for the store.  Other language translations can be added later.

Category

Categories and subcategories generate the navigation tree that shoppers use to browse through your store.

Specify the primary category this product will be listed under by selecting the category name from the Category dropdown.

Tip: A product can be assigned to multiple categories and subcategories. For example, a desktop computer might belong to both the Computers category in a computer store, and to the category for all products by a certain manufacturer.

 

Image

Each product can have multiple images associated with it for shoppers to view when looking at the product details (see Managing Products).  For example, you can display the product from multiple perspectives or the product in different available colors.

The image you add here is the main image displayed when shoppers view product details.  If you wish to have a picture displayed when the product details are viewed, either upload a new image using the  Upload New Image  button or select an existing image using the  Browse Existing Images  button.

Tip: CubeCart automatically generates the thumbnail image shown in category listings, and other places in the store where a smaller image is required.

 

Warning: If you intend to upload images in “.gif” format, then you must enable CubeCart’s “GIF” image support under the GD section of the General Sittings screen or product thumbnail images will not be generated by the system.

 

Normal Price

Enter the normal price for the product. This is the price that will normally be charged for this product. Discounts may be applied to this price based on sales that you define.

Sale Price

Specify the sales price for the item. This value is only used when you put your store into a per product sales mode.

Product Weight

Enter the weight of the item. Shipping charges are usually based on the combined weight of the products ordered. The Weight you enter here should be the shipping weight of the item, including any required packaging. For instance, a 30 pound ceramic vase might require boxing and cushioning materials weighing an additional 5 pounds, so the shipping weight would be 30 pounds for that item.

Weight values are always specified in the Units of Measurement (Lbs or Kg) you defined in the Stock Settings section of the General Settings screen. One unit of measurement is used for all weights throughout your store.

Tax Class

If this product is subject to tax, select the tax class for the item from the dropdown menu. Whether a product is taxable or not depends on your country and jurisdiction. Some things, such as services, certain food products, or some books are not taxed. Check with your accountant or tax attorney for specific, up-to-date information.

Stock Level

Enter the number of items in stock.

Use stock Level

Select “Yes” if you intend to use stock levels in your store.   Otherwise select “No”.

Product Type

Identify the product type. Tangible, if it is a physical product. Digital, if it is a downloadable product, e.g., MP3, e-book, etc.

If it is a digital product, you will need to enter where the file is stored for downloading.

HTTP Path: http://www.domain.com/downloads/download.exe  or
Server Root Path: D:\hshome\FTPusename\downloads\download.exe (Recommended!)

The advantage of using the server root path is that files can be stored elsewhere than the publicly accessible folder. If this method is chosen CubeCart will automatically create a download link which has an expiry time and max amount of downloads which is configured in the store settings.

Include in latest products in homepage

Select “Yes” if you want this product displayed in the latest products listing on the store homepage.   Otherwise select “No”.

Finally, click the  Add Product  button to add the product.

Set up product options (attributes)

CubeCart allows you to setup product options to offer shoppers a choice of attributes such as color and size when they purchase a product. Setting up product options is a three step process: 1, create an option (e.g. color), 2, create option values (e.g., red, blue, green, etc.), and then 3, assign the option and values to a product (e.g. T-Shirt > Color > Red).

Add a product option

To add a product option to a product, click on the CatalogProduct Options menu link.  The Product Options screen will be displayed to allow you to enter your product options.  Complete the three steps below:

1)     Under section 1, “Create an option”, enter the name of the product option (e.g., Size, Color, etc.) you want to add and then click on the  Add Option  button.

2)     Next, add the option values, under section 2, “Create an option value”. First, select the option you want to add values to from the drop down.  Then, enter the value name (e.g., Large, Blue, etc.) and click on the  Add Attribute  button.

3)     After you have added the option values, you can assign the options and values to your products under section 3, “Assign option & value to product”. Select the product and then select the option and value you want to assign to the product from the dropdowns. For each option/value you can define an option price (Option Price) and set it to be added to or subtracted from (Add/Subtract), the normal product price.  If there is no difference in price for the product option, leave the Option Price field blank. After you have finished the entry, click on the  Add Product Option  button.

Edit a product option or value

To edit a product option or value, click on the CatalogProduct Options menu link.  The Product Options screen will be displayed to allow you to edit options and values.  Click on the Edit link next to the name of the option or value you want to edit, make the desired changes, and then click on the  Edit Option  or  Edit Attribute  button to save your updates.

Delete a product option or value

You can delete a product option or value by first clicking on the CatalogProduct Options menu link.  The Product Options screen will be displayed to allow you to delete a product option or value.  Click on the Delete link next to the name of the option or value you want to delete.

Add multiple images to a product

CubeCart allows you to add multiple images for shoppers to view when looking at a product’s details.  For example, if you want to add images to display a product from different perspectives or to show the product in available colors, you can.

Adding multiple images to a product is completed in two steps: 1, uploading the additional product images using the Upload Images facility and 2, assigning the images to a product.

1.      To upload additional images for a product click on the File ManagerUpload Images link.  A screen similar to the one below will be displayed to allow you to upload new images.

Browse to the image you want to upload on your PC using the  Browse  button and then click on the  Upload Image  button.  After you have completed uploading the additional images for the product, click on the  Close Window  button.

2.      To assign the additional images to a product, click on the CatalogView Products link under the Administration menu. You will be presented with a screen which lists the products you currently have in your store.

 

Click on the Manage Images link under the image for the product you want to add the additional images to.  A screen similar to the one below will be displayed. Click on the Add link to add the image to those displayed for the product.

Put a product into multiple categories

You can assign a product to multiple categories and subcategories. For example, a desktop computer in a computer web store might be assigned to both a Computers category, and also to a category for all products built by a certain manufacturer.

To add a product to multiple categories, click on the CatalogView Products link under the Administration tool menu. You will be presented with a screen which lists the products you currently have in your store.

Click on the Manage Categories link next to the product you want to add to additional categories. A screen will be displayed which lists the available categories and sub-categories.

Click on the Add link to add the product to the category.  Click on the Close Window link when you have all of the additional categories you want to the product.

Edit existing products

To edit existing products, click on the View Products link under the Catalog section of the Administration tool menu. You will be presented with the Product Inventory screen which lists the products you currently have in your store.

 

To edit a product, click on the Edit link next to the product you want to edit and a screen similar to the one below will be displayed to allow you to edit the product settings.

After you have completed your updates click on the  Edit Product  button to save your changes.

Delete a product

To delete a product, click on the View Products link under the Catalog section of the Administration tool menu. You will be presented with a list of the products you currently have in your store.  Click on the Delete link next to the product you want to delete.

Tip: You can filter the products displayed to you when you click on the View Products link by setting the Filter criteria at the top of the Product Inventory screen.
